Description:
Poor Sammy was found tied up to a tree, no food, no water, just left to his fate. Thankfully he was found by one of our volunteers and he was taken to a foster home until space became available at Happys. Once in foster Sammy bonded so well with the lady he would follow her wherever she went. Sadly the neighbours threatened to kill him, so he was brought to Happys to keep him safe.
Sammy came to the UK on our December transport but is sadly again looking for his new forever home.
Sammy is an absolute sweetheart. He is a real companion dog; he will walk all day, and loves a fuss. He walks well on the lead, and (with the help of a sit command and a well timed treat) isn’t reactive at all. When he meets other dogs he is generally very well behaved, and just does a little bark in frustration when the meeting ends. We have found he needs distracting from motorcycles and bicycles, and again this is easy with a sit command and a treat. He is happy to wait when we meet other humans and stop for a chat, it’s another treat opportunity! He has visited other people’s homes and has been a model dog, turning on the charm. Sammy is quick to learn, and is very food driven so this helps with training. He has shown good recall in a secure field, and his ‘wait’ is coming on. He has learnt not to counter surf, but is still prone to jumping up, often quite high, but this is much improved. He is so excited by food that he finds it hard to contain his excitement!
Possibly because of his life before he was rescued, Sammy does get very defensive of his home and his humans indoors. He really needs to be the only dog in the house, and visitors need to be carefully introduced, so that Sammy can feel safe that they pose no threat to his space or his human(s). Sammy so far doesn’t ‘get’ toys (unless they involve food), but will happily jump jumps, climb ramps and weave around posts for treats. He would probably be an amazing at proper agility. Sammy is housetrained, hasn’t been allowed on sofas and has respected that boundary, and sleeps for as long as you will let him! He has been left for a few hours without any problem at all. Jumps in the car no bother and travels well.
He is happy to go into a crate if needed and he has taken himself to it a few times without even being encouraged and despite being very food driven he is never a pest at the table
He’s a lovely little man who will be so loyal and loving to his human(s). He needs to be an only dog and the house needs to be children and pet free. He needs an experienced home with a secure garden
If you think you could offer Sammy a safe and loving home, please fill out a registration form for him.
Thank you for your interest in Sammy if you would like to apply to adopt one of our dogs, please read the ‘How do I Adopt’ pages, where you can find more information about the process and the costs involved.
As you can imagine, each one of our dogs is very precious to us, they haven’t had the best start in life and therefore it is absolutely crucial we find the right homes for them. When you complete a registration form, please tell us as much as you can about why you are looking to adopt a dog and how you think you can meet their needs. Every dog is an individual and our amazing rehoming team will know exactly what type of home each dog needs to thrive. For example, will the dog cope with a small garden or is it the type of dog who needs to live in a rural environment? Will the dog enjoy being around children, or is it best suited to an adult only home? Will it cope sharing a home with other pets, or is it best as an only dog? Are you outdoorsy types who like to go hiking, or would you prefer a dog who is happy to snuggle up on the sofa with you? Our rehoming team will be very familiar with the needs of each of our dogs and the information you provide on your application form will help them to match you with the right dog.
