Description:

Carmella is now in a foster home in the UK. This is what her fosterer has to say about her: “Carmella walks calmly on the lead without pulling and enjoys a walk out around the fields with the other dogs. I have not let her off lead yet. She has met sheep and horses and is not bothered by them.

In the house, she is calm and sleeps a lot. She loves a cuddle and asks for one in a very gentle way. She is sometimes nervous if you are approaching her head on and she will back away but if you stand still she will come if you call her name. She will get more confident as time goes on and I expect this behaviour will disappear completely once she has been with someone for a while. My 78 year old mum, who walks with a stick, adores Carmella and says she is always very gentle and calm around her. Carmella was slightly wary of my adult son but very quickly decided he was ok and went and sat with him for cuddles. She likes the other dogs but prefers the males. She would not get on with a dominant female but is fine with our female yorkie. Carmella is house trained. She is an absolute joy to have around. We love her!”

This is the story of how Carmella came to be with 1 Dog. Carmella and the three dogs she was found with were moments away from a tragic fate—one that would have ended their lives before they ever had a chance to know love, safety, or kindness. We received a desperate call for help—how could we possibly say no? Then came the video, a heartbreaking glimpse into their final moments before rescue. These poor, defenceless dogs had no idea what was happening as dog catchers surrounded them. One by one, they were rounded up, poles tightened around their necks, their bodies dragged mercilessly. As they struggled, they were lifted by their legs, their heads slamming against the cold, hard ground before being thrown into the waiting van.

Their nightmare didn’t end there. They were taken to small, suffocating rooms—cramped, cold, and completely devoid of light, food, or water. No comfort. No kindness. Just endless hours of fear, waiting for the next unkind hand to decide their fate. Then came the pictures—their lifeless, hopeless eyes staring out from behind rusted bars. Silent pleas for help. How terrified they must have felt, hearts pounding, bodies trembling, waiting for what they thought was the inevitable. But for Carmella and her friends, fate had other plans. They were saved that day, but Carmella’s journey isn’t over—she still needs a loving home where she can finally feel safe, where she can replace fear with trust and loneliness with love.

Could you be the one to show Carmella that her suffering wasn’t for nothing? That her story doesn’t have to end in sadness? She’s waiting for someone to prove that kindness exists—that she is worth saving, worth loving, and worth fighting for. Could that someone be you?

We are searching for a special home for this deserving girl—one where she can finally experience the love and security she’s always needed. A rural setting with another friendly dog for companionship would be ideal, but she would be best suited to a home without cats, small furries, or chickens. A large, securely fenced garden with direct access from the house is a must, giving her a safe space to run, play, and relax. She needs someone patient and dedicated, willing to invest time in her training and, most importantly, shower her with love. After such a difficult start to her young life, she deserves nothing less than a home where she is cherished, safe, and warm—forever. She is so worth it. Will you be the one to change her life?

Thank you for your interest in Carmella if you would like to apply to adopt one of our dogs, please read the ‘How do I Adopt’ pages, where you can find more information about the process and the costs involved.

As you can imagine, each one of our dogs is very precious to us, they haven’t had the best start in life and therefore it is absolutely crucial we find the right homes for them.  When you complete a registration form, please tell us as much as you can about why you are looking to adopt a dog and how you think you can meet their needs.  Every dog is an individual and our amazing rehoming team will know exactly what type of home each dog needs to thrive.  For example, will the dog cope with a small garden or is it the type of dog who needs to live in a rural environment?  Will the dog enjoy being around children, or is it best suited to an adult only home?  Will it cope sharing a home with other pets, or is it best as an only dog?  Are you outdoorsy types who like to go hiking, or would you prefer a dog who is happy to snuggle up on the sofa with you?  Our rehoming team will be very familiar with the needs of each of our dogs and the information you provide on your application form will help them to match you with the right dog.
